Bruxism is a jaw-motor behavior that has received increasing attention from dental professionals in recent decades. Despite the growing body of literature, many fables about bruxism are still told. This lecture will elaborate on seven facts about bruxism: 1. Jaw-muscle activities may represent other conditions in non-healthy individuals; 2. Bruxism is a common finding in the general population; 3. Bruxism has a multifactorial (biopsychosocial) etiology; 4. Bruxism may have several negative potential consequences for the bruxing individual; 5. Bruxism may also have several positive potential consequences for the bruxing individual; 6. Standardized methods for the assessment of bruxism are currently available; and 7. The assessment and management of bruxism require an interdisciplinary approach. Based on this elaboration, the facts will hopefully replace the fables.
